Understanding Teen Dating Violence

Teen dating violence is a serious issue affecting young people across the country. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, psychological aggression, and stalking by a current or former intimate partner. Recent statistics paint a concerning picture:

  • + 1 in 3 teens in the U.S. will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from a dating partner before they become adults
  • + Nearly 1 in 11 female and approximately 1 in 15 male high school students report having experienced physical dating violence in the last year
  • + 26% of women and 15% of men who were victims of contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner first experienced these or other forms of violence by that partner before age 18

Why Prevention Matters

Prevention is more than just a strategy – it’s the key to ending the cycle of violence. By educating young people about healthy relationships, consent, and the impact of gender stereotypes, we can create lasting change in our community. Research shows that teens who receive education about healthy relationships are better equipped to:

  • + Recognize warning signs of abuse
  • + Set healthy boundaries
  • + Communicate effectively with partners
  • + Challenge harmful gender stereotypes
  • + Seek help when needed

About the Movie

“Easy A” serves as a perfect springboard for discussing how gender stereotypes and social pressures can affect young people’s relationships and self-image. Through humor and wit, the film tackles serious themes about reputation, double standards, and the importance of standing up for oneself.
