A Survivor’s Story and A Mother’s Love

Support Survivors with a Year-End Gift

Carrie & Courtney standing together outdoors.

My daughter is a survivor.

Courtney was sexually assaulted by a family friend when she was 25 years old. She is autistic and trusted this person like family. Family is extremely important to Courtney, and this violent act shattered her world.

We knew Courtney would be more vulnerable to abuse, and as a family, we worked hard to protect her as best as we could by keeping only a close circle of trusted friends and family. To have someone within that circle betray her, it’s really hard to describe the pain I felt for her.

We worked closely with the justice system, and her perpetrator is now behind bars. I am so proud of Courtney for her incredible courage during the trial.

We were fortunate in three important ways as we navigated this trauma:

  • The detectives and prosecutors were kind, understanding, and championed our battle to bring justice for Courtney.
  • My extended family lives locally and supported Courtney and my family with love and compassion throughout this horrifying experience.
  • We found Lumina Alliance.

Initially, we had difficulty finding therapy for Courtney due to her autism. However, at Lumina Alliance, we found a therapist who connected with her immediately and sought additional training to better communicate with her. I am so grateful that this journey led us to Lumina Alliance. Courtney is now empowered to know her voice matters and has gained strength to move forward.

That is why I am writing to you today. Every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted.* Courtney could be your family member, friend, or neighbor. Please help survivors in our community by supporting the life-saving services at Lumina Alliance provided at no charge, which include:

  • 24-Hour Crisis and Information Line
  • Individual and Group Therapy
  • Advocacy and Case Management
  • 3 Emergency Shelters
  • 10 Transitional Housing Units
  • Prevention Programs in our schools and community

It is only through generous donations and grants that their vital work can continue.

Your urgently needed contribution to Lumina Alliance will make an immediate impact.  For example, a tax-deductible donation of $250 can provide one month of therapy for a victim of sexual assault

I want others to know that even in the face of insurmountable challenges, there is a beacon of light among the many caregivers at Lumina Alliance. Hopefully, Courtney’s story will help other victims find hope and healing too.

As a family, we are now committed to supporting Lumina Alliance in any way we can. Please take a moment to give generously today.

With gratitude,

Carrie Sanders
