More Than a Pet: Why Keeping Families Together Matters

When survivors leave an abusive relationship, they often leave with only what they can carry. In the rush to find safety, many are forced to make heartbreaking decisions, including whether they can bring the pets they love.

For many survivors, pets are not "just animals." They are family.

Research continues to show that companion animals play an important role in the healing journey after trauma. Pets provide comfort, reduce anxiety, offer unconditional love, and restore a sense of routine and normalcy during an incredibly uncertain time. For children especially, a familiar pet can be a source of stability after experiencing violence.

For one Lumina Alliance client, whom we'll call "A," that bond was everything.

When "A" came to Lumina, she was devastated to learn that her beloved dog was scheduled for adoption after an unexpected stay at Animal Services. She had every intention of bringing him home, but the realities of rebuilding her life after abuse created obstacles she never anticipated.

Thankfully, our community came together.

Working alongside our partners at CAPSLO, Lumina Alliance helped cover the costs needed to reunite "A" with her dog. Through a little serendipity, the adoption process did not move forward, and she was able to hold her best friend again.

The reunion was emotional, joyful, and a powerful reminder that healing often comes in unexpected forms.

Stories like "A's" highlight something we don't always talk about: safety includes every member of the family.

When survivors know their pets are safe, they're more likely to seek help. When children are reunited with a beloved dog or cat, they regain a piece of the stability they've lost. And when communities work together to remove barriers, survivors have one less impossible choice to make.
