There’s a Place for You in This Work

At Lumina Alliance, our vision is to create a safe, thriving, and equitable community. And creating that kind of community takes all of us.

You don’t have to be a therapist, advocate, or social worker to support someone who has experienced sexual assault or intimate partner violence. You can learn how to listen without judgment, respond with compassion, understand the impacts of trauma, and help someone find the support they need.

That’s what our state-certified 65-hour Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Peer Counselor Training is designed to teach. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate recognizing their training to provide crisis intervention, peer counseling, advocacy, and support to survivors. While this certification does not make you a licensed therapist or professional counselor, it prepares you with specialized, trauma-informed skills to support survivors and serve as a trained Crisis & Information Line volunteer.

Learn Skills You Can Actually Use

This isn’t just about learning definitions or statistics. The training gives participants tangible skills for supporting people who have experienced trauma.

You’ll learn how to help someone create a personalized safety plan, practice active listening and crisis intervention, respond to disclosures of violence, connect someone with community resources, and offer survivor-centered support without taking away their choices or autonomy.

The training also explores Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and early childhood trauma, helping participants better understand how experiences early in life can affect health, relationships, behavior, and responses to trauma later in life.

Together, these tools help participants understand not only what trauma can look like, but how to respond in ways that help people feel heard, supported, and empowered.

Upon successful completion, participants receive California-certified Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Peer Counselor training certificate and are prepared to volunteer on Lumina Alliance’s 24/7 Crisis & Information Line.

Take What You Learn Into Your Community

For many participants, the value of the training reaches far beyond volunteering.

A deeper understanding of trauma can change the way you interact with people in your workplace, classroom, organization, or community. These skills can be especially valuable for people working in or pursuing counseling, therapy, social work, education, healthcare, law enforcement, victim services, nonprofit work, human resources, case management, public health, and other people-centered professions.

But you don’t need to be pursuing any particular career to belong here.

You might be a student preparing for your future career. You might work with people every day and want to better understand what they may be carrying with them. Or you might simply want to know how to show up for someone in your life when they need support.

These are skills our whole community can benefit from.

Why We Train Every Lumina Employee

At Lumina Alliance, every employee completes this training, regardless of their role. A survivor might disclose an experience to a therapist or advocate, but they might also share it with someone at an event, in our office, or during an everyday interaction. We want every member of our team to know how to respond with compassion, support the survivor’s choices, and help connect them with the resources they need.

It’s one of the ways we put our commitment to being a trauma-informed organization into practice every day.

Sometimes creating a safer community looks like being there when someone needs to be heard.

Crisis line volunteers help survivors and community members access emotional support, safety planning, information, resources, and connection to services. They may be one of the first people someone reaches out to during an incredibly difficult moment.

And every person who learns how to recognize trauma, understand the dynamics of sexual and intimate partner violence, and respond with compassion helps us move closer to the community we envision.
