Building Safer Futures Starts Early

Creating a safer community begins with young people, giving them the support, tools, and understanding they need to build healthy relationships and recognize harm before it takes hold.

That’s the heart behind a recent $30,000 grant to Lumina Alliance from the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust, approved on February 25, 2026. The funding will support child-centered prevention programming across San Luis Obispo County, while also strengthening the broader network of care that surrounds local children and teens.

At Lumina Alliance, prevention doesn’t stand alone. It’s part of a continuum of support that includes crisis intervention, therapy, and safe housing, services that work together to ensure young people have what they need not only to stay safe, but to heal and move forward. When a young person experiences harm, that support system helps them process what happened, find stability, and begin to break cycles of violence.

“Supporting young people through prevention is one of the most meaningful ways we can create lasting change,” said Howard Carroll, Trustee of the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust. “Lumina Alliance is helping ensure that children and teens in our community have the support they need to stay safe, heal, and build healthier futures.”

Through school- and community-based programs, Lumina Alliance reaches youth early, creating spaces where they can learn, ask questions, and grow into adults who contribute to safer, more connected communities.

Because when young people are supported at every step, real change becomes possible.

Lumina Alliance is deeply grateful to the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust, which prioritizes investments that strengthen the wellbeing of San Luis Obispo County, for investing in prevention and the wellbeing of our community’s youth.
