Answer the call
Be a voice of support and hope for survivors when they need it most.
Be their lifeline
When someone reaches out in crisis, your voice can be the turning point. As a Crisis & Information Line Volunteer with Lumina Alliance, you’ll offer compassionate support and critical resources to survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence across the Central Coast. Each call you take is a powerful step toward safety, healing, and hope.
Skills that matter
Our comprehensive training prepares you to become a state-certified domestic violence and sexual assault crisis counselor. You’ll gain valuable skills in trauma-informed care, active listening, crisis intervention, and survivor-centered advocacy. Whether you're exploring a career in social work, healthcare, law, or simply want to make a meaningful impact, this experience equips you to show up with empathy and strength—in any setting.
Our volunteers are often a survivor's first relationship on their journey towards healing.
What do Crisis & Information Line volunteers do?
Volunteers play a vital role in Lumina Alliance’s 24-hour crisis and information line. After completing certification training, you’ll join a team of dedicated advocates who support survivors and their loved ones in the following ways:
Crisis Support: Offer immediate support, information, and resources over the phone. Every conversation begins by believing survivors and empowering them to make the choices that are right for them.
Accompaniments: When requested, accompany survivors to law enforcement interviews and medical forensic exams, providing comfort and advocacy throughout the process.
Advocacy: Collaborate with local agencies to advocate for survivor needs, whether navigating healthcare, legal systems, or other support services.
Emergency Shelter Support: Help coordinate emergency shelter intakes and transport, ensuring survivors feel safe, seen, and supported from the moment they arrive.
Community Outreach: Represent Lumina Alliance at resource tables during local events like health fairs and farmers markets—raising awareness and connecting people to support.
“It has been really valuable learning how to talk to people in crisis; I’ve really been able to step up professionally because of this experience.”
— Luke, MFT student

A note for survivors
Many of our most powerful advocates are survivors themselves. If you’ve experienced sexual or intimate partner violence, you are welcome to volunteer—when you feel emotionally ready.
Because the training and work can be emotionally intense, we encourage thoughtful self-reflection and self-care. We ask that at least one year has passed since receiving services from Lumina Alliance or a similar organization.
For questions or to learn more, reach out to our Volunteer Training Manager at Volunteer@LuminaAlliance.org
